Well, thanks to comex‘s new jailbreak for all current iOS devices including the iPhone 4, I’ve got a new list of my top 10 jailbroken apps and modifications to iOS!

10. MobileVolumeSound – is a very simple modification to iOS, it simply adds the familiar “bloop” sounds from OS X when you’re turning the volume up or down. Just a nice little addition that gives your jailbroken iDevice a bit of charm. Works out of the box on iOS 4 and iPhone 4!

09. PDF Loading Warner – is a little utility to prevent hijackers from taking control of your device. Comex’s jailbreak used a PDF font exploit to jailbreak your device, but attackers could use that same vunerability to take CONTROL of your device. This is a must install for those “just in case” scenarios. It will simply pop up and ask if you really want to laod a PDF, so no websites can try to load them without you noticing.

08. Winterboard – is clearly one of everybody’s favorites. Seems to work with iOS4 and iPhone 4 without much issue. The old themes based on summerboard aren’t really worth it anymore, especially if you have an iPhone 4, but if you’re graphic savvy you can make some of your own themes. Right now I’m using Winterboard to change #02 in my list (biteSMS) to the standard retina display’s Messages.app icon. Possibilities are really endless though, so keep an eye out for some iPhone 4 based themes!

07. Notifier – is a modification of an old favorite, StatusNotifier. It uses the same technique but actually works on iOS 3.X and 4.X. You may want to install the package called “Status Notifier Fix” instead though, it will include this and the required libraries to run, as well as a Winterboard theme to make the notifier icons used the ones that were originally packaged with StatusNotifier. For those of you unfamiliar with StatusNotifier, it puts icons next to your battery to alert you of new IMs, SMSs, MMSs, emails, missed calls, and voicemails! Please note however, Notifier has not been updated with iPhone 4 graphics, so they’ll look a bit “old school” until there is an update.

06. Installous – is a shady subject for sure… But lets face it, it lets you try out apps before dropping big money into them. Like $30 for the LogMeIn app. Add the repository of http://cydia.hackulo.us/ and install this package. You’ll be quite satisfied. As of right now they’re currently looking for graphic designers to help assist in a redesign and update for iPhone 4 displays as well!

05. LockInfo – is actually a bit pricey for an app, but the things that it does is fairly amazing. It’s not 100% ready for iOS 4 just yet, it works but there’s still some bugs in it. I personally use this to keep myself informed of new emails on my lock screen, the current weather, new notifications, and I keep a an event list of my calendars visible for the next 2 weeks. It really helps me stay organized and helps me stay up to date on work-based tasks also.

04. SBSettings – was something I found it hard to live without when I purchased my iPhone 4, it’s something you take for granted and should be one of the first things you install. Thanks to BigBoss for keeping this updated and ready to go for iOS 4!

03. Cyntact – by saurik, who is the author and maintainer of Cydia. It’s $0.99, but I always recommend this one, as it helps support Cydia’s developer which can’t be a bad thing at all, but also for the simple fact that its an amazing modifaction to iOS which shows your contact pictures next to their names in the contact list, phone list, and even works in third party apps as well. It’s been updated for iOS 4 and the iPhone 4 with support for high resolution pictures as well!

02. biteSMS – is an amazing SMS tool with amazing popup notifications, and SMS management. It has a large number of settings. It’s been updated for iOS 4, with high resolution graphics for the iPhone 4 as well. You really need to check it out to see for yourself!

01. Infinifolders – written by chpwn is $1.99, but its absolutely well worth it. It’s something Apple should have done from that start, it allows you to have more than 12 apps per folder, it allows you to scroll through them vertically. Having one “Games” and one “Utilities” folder really helps clean up your Springboard

Unfortunately however, he never got the chance, as I found a very quick and efficient way to make a mobile version of our site. It also functions closely to a native iPhone app as well!

Above is a quick overview of what you’ll get if you go to our page on your iPhone. It’s clearly a mobile version of our site, and should be extremely easy to navigate, as we’ve implemented a special menu shown here:

If you have an iPhone, be sure to add our page to your home screen. You’ll be greeted with a fancy Jawa icon, and be sucked into the app all the time, I promise.

If you’re on another type of smartphone, try checking the site out and let us know how it looks in the comments. Screenshots are also welcome!

WARNING: This guide is NOT for those who are uncomfortable using SSH to manipulate databases on their iPhones!

Will you mess something up? No… probably not, but you can’t come crying to us if you do!

Now, if you’re like me at all, you LOVE Google Calendar, and you use Google Mobile Sync… The sync is great, as it does contacts, gmail, and calendars… However it does not sync over your calendar colors. This is due to two things: There is no place in the Exchange ActiveSync protocol to include colors, and Apple has a terrible bug in their iPhone not allowing any custom/manual colors by default. Even if you use iCal to sync your calendars you’ll have noticed by now that the colors are NOT the same in iCal and on your iPhone.

If you have a lot of calendars, this can become mentally straining trying to memorize two different sets of colors. Not anymore! I’ve figured out how to manually chose those colors on your jailbroken iPhone!

First thing is first, you need to find out what colors you will need. You need RGB vales for this, NOT hexadecimal color codes. I just opened my Google Calendar, took a screenshot, and used a color dropper tool from any random photo manipulation tool to get my RGB values, and I jotted them down on a piece of scrap paper.

At this point you should also make sure SQLite3 is installed on your iPhone, just load up Cydia and search for it, if you’ve got a green check next to it, you’re all set, if not install it, and reboot if required.

Next up you’ll need to SSH into your iPhone. Use your favorite SSH tool to get in, and log in as root. Once you’re in you’ll want to issue these commands.

iPhone:~ root# cd /var/mobile/Library/Calendar/
iPhone:/var/mobile/Library/Calendar root# sqlite3 Calendar.sqlitedb
SQLite version 3.6.12
Enter “.help” for instructions
sqlite> select title,color_r,color_g,color_b from Calendar;
Default|-1|-1|-1
Personal|15|77|140
Work|181|0|13
School|229|98|0
Facebook|103|10|108
Tech Jawa|229|98|0
Tech Jawa Live|181|0|13
Holidays|47|141|0

Once you issue the above commands, you should see your calendar names and their current colors in RGB format. From here we’ll need to update the database to make changes. I made my changes to match my Google Calendar colors exactly, and here’s the commands that I entered, you should do the same, but replace the color values with your own, and obviously replace the titles with the titles of your calendars.

sqlite> update Calendar set color_r=102, color_g=140, color_b=217 where title=’Personal’;
sqlite> update Calendar set color_r=217, color_g=102, color_b=102 where title =’Work’;
sqlite> update Calendar set color_r=101, color_g=173, color_b=137 where title=’School’;
sqlite> update Calendar set color_r=51, color_g=102, color_b=204 where title=’Facebook’;
sqlite> update Calendar set color_r=242, color_g=166, color_b=64 where title=’Tech Jawa’;
sqlite> update Calendar set color_r=140, color_g=102, color_b=217 where title=’Tech Jawa TV’;
sqlite> update Calendar set color_r=221, color_g=85, color_b=17 where title=’Holidays’;
sqlite> select title,color_r,color_g,color_b from Calendar;
Default|-1|-1|-1
Personal|102|140|217
Work|217|102|102
School|101|173|137
Facebook|51|102|204
Tech Jawa|242|166|64
Tech Jawa TV|140|102|217
Holidays|221|85|17

That last command is just to verify your results, and you should be good to go, just open up the Calendar app (or re-open it, if you already had it open) and you should notice your changes. These changes also carry over to calendar based apps from Cydia such as “LockCalendar” and “LockInfo” as well.

Here’s my final results, compare them to the image at the top of the post of my Google Calendar colors.

Just in the case that you screw something up, here’s the original color values if you want them back.

181,0,13 – Red
229,98,0 – Orange
47,141,0 – Green
15,77,140 – Blue
103,10,108 Purple

Why would you pay for apps in Cydia when Cydia is mostly driven by free content. In this post, we’ll explain where to download the apps that “unofficial” developers on Cydia are trying to make you pay for. Tech Jawa does not condone piracy, we’re simply informing you that there ARE sources out there where the .deb files CAN be downloaded from… First is to create these sources in Cydia.

When you first start up Cydia allow it to load and refresh all of the sources on it, then go to manage, then edit (top right corner), click add (top left corner), type in the sources listed in the picture above (one at a time), click on add source and wait for it to load up the new source. Once finished with that under your sections tab will be new sections to choose from.

With those sources, you now have access to the .deb that are “supposed” to be paid for.

If anybody’s reading this that isn’t aware, Cydia is what is generally installed on jailbroken iPhones, and allows you to get unofficial applications not sanctioned by Apple on your device… I won’t go into it much more than that, because if you didn’t know what it is, you wont be using this list anyhow.

First this is first, go into Cydia and manage your sources, add this.

http://cydia.hackulo.us/

Now, in alphabetical order, here’s my list of Cydia essentials.

AppSync – Will be called AppSync for OS 3.X, depending on what iPhone OS you’re running. This allows you to sync any pirated copies of apps back into and from your iTunes installation.

CyDelete – CyDelete allows you to delete “unofficial” apps just like you would a normal one, by holding your finger over it, and then tapping the “x” in the corner. Comes in very handy.

Cyntact – $1.00, but well worth it. This will show your contacts photos next to their names in your address book, and favorites list. It integrates with apps that pull up your contacts list too.

Emoji – Enables the option to turn on the Japanese Emoji keyboard. These are the high-quality iPhone smiles, and can even be sent to, and received by non-jailbroken iPhone users!

Five Icon Dock – Why wouldn’t you want to have five icons down there? It’s a much better utilization of your dock, you get to add that one extra thing you always wish you could. I use: Contacts, Messages, Phone, E-Mail, iPod.

Installous – This is where you get official app store apps without paying for them. I’m not endorsing this in any way, just letting people know it’s out there.

Lock Calendar – This puts your upcoming calendar appointments on your lock screen… Coupled with Google Sync this is amazing. I have my Google Calendar sync wirelessly (via push) to my phone, and all events show up on my lock screen. This means I never really have to go into my Calendar app unless I need to add a new event on the go.

MakeItMine – This allows you to customize what your carrier logo says. Get rid of the AT&T or anything else you might have up there, and put a personal touch on your phone, or use this to completely blank out your carrier logo if you think it just takes up space.

MobileTerminal – This allows you to enter command ON your phone, without needing to SSH into it. You can really use this for alot of things if you know what you’re doing.

OpenSSH – Well, this is the quintessential iPhone jailbroken app. It allows you to SSH into your phone, and SCP files to/from it.

PrivaCy – Adds an option in your Settings app to keep your iPhone data private. Alot of apps are sending “anonymous” usage statistics back to the mothership, use this to opt out.

SBSettings – With a finger swipe across the top bar (with the time) you’ll get access to alot of power-user features. My favorites have to be the ability to hide my unused icons, but still keep the apps useable via spotlight, the ability to kill processes, and the “free memory” button.

Scrobbl – A Last FM scrobbler that will scrobble tracks as you listen to them over Edge/3G. A must have for any Last FM user.

StatusNotifier – This will give you status bar (top bar) alerts of new messages, emails, voicemails, and others. Extremely well done.

Veency – A VNC SERVER for the iPhone… This allows one to control their phone with their mouse and keyboard. I use it while at work for checking SMS messages and whatnot.

Winterboard – The only way to theme your iPhone. Here’s the custom theme I’ve put together over a few months.

Now I’m sure there’s alot more apps out there, but these are my essential ones. I try alot more Cydia apps all the time, but generally don’t stick to them like I do the list above.

If you’ve found anything thats essential to you, please share in the comments!

THIS WILL GET YOU THE OFFICIAL AT&T 5.5 CARRIER FILE ON YOUR PHONE WITHOUT UPDATING TO 3.1 LIKE APPLE/AT&T WANT YOU TO DO!

Also please note, if you want to do this on an an original iPhone (2G), please see my previous post on that subject.

There are many reasons for this… actually like two.

You can’t upgrade because of Exchange and encryption issues.

You have a jailbroken iPhone 3G/3GS, and don’t want to upgrade to 3.1 yet (and ruin your jailbreak)

So to begin, first thing is first:

1. Be sure you close iTunes

2.

MAC OS X:
Close iTunes.
Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal).
Run the command:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Windows 32 Bit:
Close iTunes.
Go to Start then Run and type CMD.
Run this command:

"C:Program FilesiTunesiTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

Windows 64 Bit:
Close iTunes.
Go to Start then Run and type CMD.
Run this command:

"C:Program Files (x86)iTunesiTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

3. After you accomplish that, you will need to download this Official AT&T 5.5 Carrier File. I’d have recommend you save it to your desktop.

4. Open iTunes up, and plug in your iPhone, say NO to updating to 3.1 firmware.

5. Click your iPhone in the left sidebar, and then:
(Mac) Option+Left Click the “Update” button.
(Win) Shift+Left Click the “Update” button.

6. After that, you’ll see a window show up where you need to select the type of file before it lets you choose it.

7. After that, pick the AT&T_US.ipcc file, and choose Open.

8. Nothing will really happen to notify you that it worked, after you’re done though, unplug your phone

9. Reboot your phone.

10. Go into Settings, and then General, then About, your carrier should show your carrier as AT&T 5.5.

11. If all is well so far, then you should be able to start sending/receiving MMS messages.

12. Enjoy, and post any questions/comments/concerns in the comments section, and direct your friends to this post as well.

Well now, lets take a look back at WWDC ’09.
I can quote Apple stating that the iPhone 2G will not be receiving MMS capabilities because of a “hardware limitation”.

DO NOT TRY THIS ON AN IPHONE 3G, IT WILL BRICK YOUR IPHONE

You have been warned.

However, there is a new package on Cydia that is going to help us get there.

Something to note about this hack:
You do not need SwirlyMMS! This works though the Messages.app (Text/SMS App)
All previous hacks used SwirlyMMS, a paid jailbroken app that lets you send messages through its own app, but not the official Apple Messages.app.

And some of the things you’re going to need to get this working:

an iPhone 2G (not 3G) with OS 3.0 on it.

iTunes 8.2

And for AT&T users you’ll ALSO need:

A pre-existing messaging package (mine was an unlimited family messaging).

Another (non-apple) AT&T phone that you have access to.

Once you’ve taken care of that, lets start with the step-by-step.

1. Go to Cydia, and download “ActivateMMS2G”

2. Install it, and reboot your iPhone. If you’re on T-Mobile, you’ll need to find your correct MMS settings… So grab them from here. Do this ON YOUR IPHONE, as it will auto-install the configuration.

3. For AT&T iPhones, you’re going to need to do a lot more work… Start by downloading This customized iPhone AT&T US carrier file. Save it to your desktop somewhere.

4. You need to configure iTunes to let you use this file with your phone, so follow the directions for your operating system.

MAC OS X:
Close iTunes.
Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal).
Run the command:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Windows 32 Bit:
Close iTunes.
Go to Start then Run and type CMD.
Run this command:

“C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

Windows 64 Bit:
Close iTunes.
Go to Start then Run and type CMD.
Run this command:

“C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

5. After that, plug in your iPhone to your computer, launch iTunes back up, and option click (Mac) or shift click (Windows) the “Check for Updates” button. Change the type to be the carrier file, and select the AT&T US file from your desktop.

6. Take your iPhone SIM card out, and put it in your other AT&T phone…

7. Make some calls… I called AT&T Wireless Customer Support at 1-800-331-0500.

8. Check your AT&T Account Management online, to see if your number has changed from being an iPhone to whatever phone your using. If not make some more calls and check again. Once you’ve noticed it’s changed, go on to the next step.

9. This is why you need to have a pre-existing messaging plan, because when you’re SIM is in the new phone, it allows MMS’s to go through, because it’s not an iPhone. Switching back to the iPhone doens’t (yet) seem to block MMS’s again. If you do not already have a messaging plan, you MAY be able to add one to your account online, but I cannot confirm this works.

10. Go to this link on your iPhone, and find the US > AT&T carrier configuration, and install that.

11. Reboot your phone.

9. Send a test MMS to yourself. Please NOTE: The sending of MMS files takes some time… be patient with it, the sending bar will get NEARLY full, and then stop… wait it out, check it in a minute or two to see if it went through. If you see a red ! mark, then the message failed to send… something along the way wasn’t done properly, check the MMS settings (shown below), and try again, if it’s still not working then start over with the custom carrier files.

And here are the correct AT&T settings.

This is under Settings.app > General > Network > Cellular Data Network
(If this section is missing you did not properly apply the patch through iTunes, go back and try again.)

Some sites have reported the need for a username (wap@cingulargprs.com) and a password (CINGULAR1) but I have had success without authentication. Please let me know your findings.

Please also note, it also takes some time to RECEIVE an MMS, your one you test-sent to yourself should send, and you might not receive it for 30 seconds after that. Be patient.

This has been working for me for two days now. So far AT&T has not disabled MMS for my number, if they do I’ll be sure to update this post.

Please comment with your feedback and findings. I’ll be happy to try to help.

So anybody who’s upgraded their iPhone to 3.0 and Jailbroke it, will notice that thier new PUSH service is BROKEN.

I’ve spent an entire day full of restores and jailbreaks and finally got it working…

The trick was just to follow these simple steps:

PLEASE NOTE: This is currently only for users with valid AT&T contracts and SIM cards.

1. You’re going to need to part with your apps for now… reconfigure them later, step one is to be okay with that.

2. Do a restore in iTunes to the stock iPhone 1,1_3.0 firmware. Activate with iTunes.

3. Download PwnageTool (OSX)

4. Download the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw firmware file.

5. Once your running 3.0 on your iPhone, download the AIM (Free) app, and send yourself a message from a different screen name on a different computer, and verify that PUSH is working. If PUSHi s not working at this point, it wont be after the jailbreak either…

5. Launch the PwnageTool and choose EXPERT MODE!!!

6. Once in expert mode, go through and choose NOT to let the baseband be updated, and NOT to activate the phone, also do NOT use bootneuter at all, uncheck all boxes. – Depending on the packages you choose in the next steps, you may want to choose your /root partition be 600MB to be on the safe side.

7. Select packages if you want… I didn’t. Proceed to build the custom firmware. OSX will ask for your password about halfway, so watch it closely.

8. After building, follow the instructions in Pwnage to enter DFU/recovery mode. This is essential, and it won’t let you continue until you do so.

9. Open iTunes and close Pwnage, iTunes is going to yell at you, like usual.

10. Hold alt/option and press restore, and choose your CUSTOM firmware to load onto the iPhone.

11. Let it run its rounds with restarts and whatnot, it’s going to take a while.

12. Be sure to set it up as a new iPhone when iTunes asks you, and then LET ITUNES ACTIVATE THE PHONE FOR YOU.
YOU CANNOT DO A RESTORE, IT WILL NOT WORK

13. Before downloading any apps, grab AIM (Free) and try it again, push should be working.

14. Add http://cydia.hackulo.us to your repos and um… happy jailbreaking guys. Have fun w/ PUSH!

Well well, 3.0 has come and gone, and a few days passed before I had the motivation to upgrade.

I wish I hadn’t.

Out of ALL the new iPhone 3.0 features… The ones I will use are…. NOTHING!

To be fair, the new search is nice, but jailbreak app “QuickGold” did that just fine, it did have one advertisement, but it did the exact same function… In fact Apple got the idea from QuickGold.

Now, lets see what I could be using, but am not, because 3.0 killed it.

Scrobble – Scrobbles songs AS THEY ARE PLAYED over Edge, this means I could be driving somewhere, listening to my jams, and Tech Jawa and last.fm are updated instantly with what I’m listening to… It no longer scrobbles songs. Developer says he no longer uses a jailbroke iPhone, and has no plans to upgrade the app.

AppBackup – Backs up apps saved settings, saved games for games, and everything else associated with apps. I made the backup before the 3.0 format/upgrade, and went to restore, but alas, the app doesn’t work anymore!

WinterBoard Keyboards – Keyboard themes just don’t work anymore, plain and simple.

Status Notifier – Works, but you can’t configure any of its settings, as it just crashes, so I hope you’re okay with the default settings.

MobileFinder – Just plain crashes.

MobileTermainl – works… kinda, it starts upside down? o_O

Cyntact – Displays your contacts photos in your contacts list to left of their name… no photos in 3.0!

Backgrounder – Lets you run more than one app at once… no go on 3.0.

Intelliscreen – Shows calendar and weather on lock screen, nope. not anymore.

Those are just a few, I’m sure there’s TONS more… those are only the ones that affect me in any way.
